Welcome to the website of the “Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station of El HIerro”. An installation whose objective is to supply the Island of the Meridian with electricity from clean and renewable sources such as water and wind.
Gorona del Viento El Hierro, S.A.´s Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station is designed to supply the Meridian Island with electrical energy derived from clean, renewable energy sources such as water and wind.
The Wind Farm has capacity to fully meet El Hierro´s demand for electricity. The surplus wind energy which is not consumed by the Island´s population is used to pump water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir. This water is stored in the upper reservoir and used to produce electricity by means of a hidraulic jump at times when the wind power is inadequate.
This comprises two sets of 1,500 kW pumps and 6 sets of 500 kW pumps, with a total power of 6 MW.
Located close to the Llanos Blancos Power Station, it can store 150,000 m3 of water.
Consisting of four state-of-the-art Pelton turbines with speed regulators and flywheels which enable response time to be minimised. The total combined power of the set of turbines is 11.3 MW.
Two pipelines approximately three kilometres long and 0.80 metres in diameter, which link two water reservoirs, they are designed to meet both technical and environmental criteria in order to minimise their visual impact.
This has a capacity of 380,000 m3, and is located in a natural crater known as La Caldera, lined with waterproofed polymer sheets. This reservoir, located at an altitude of 700 m, is linked to the lower reservoir by the means of forced pipelines.
This is made up of five Enercon E-70 wind turbines, of 2.3 MW each, providing a total power of 11.5 MW to the wind farm.
